b. 500-504

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add cautionary sharps before f2 in b. 500 and 502 and f1 in b. 504. In b. 502 Chopin started writing a  in A, yet he quickly abandoned it and crossed out the germ of that accidental. The accidentals were gradually added in GE: in b. 500 already in GE1, while in the remaining ones – in GE2 (→GE3). The sharp in b. 500 was added also in FESf.

b. 501-503

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add a cautionary  before b2 in b. 501. In A one can see that Chopin crossed out that accidental; however, he inserted a  before b1 in an analogous situation in b. 505. The accidental was added also in EE and GE2 (→GE3). Moreover, we remove the poorly justified  before b on the 3rd beat of b. 503, present in all sources. In this context Chopin was also inconsistent, since he did not write a  in b. 501.

Slur in A (→FCGE)

No slur in FE (→EE)

..

The missing slur must be a result of inaccuracy of the engraver of FE (→EE).

Lower-part slur in A (→FCGE)

No slur in FE (→EE)

..

The absence of the slur encompassing the two-note sequence of the bass must be a mistake of FE (→EE). Admittedly, the slur of A is vague and goes through the area of the crossings-out, yet it does not make an impression of having been removed.

b. 503

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In A one can see a crossing-out of both the second and third crotchet in the L.H. It is difficult to decipher what was crossed out:

  • the 2nd crotchet had 3 or 4 ledger lines; in the latter it would probably be a Terzverschreibung, which Chopin first wanted to correct without rewriting the note;
  • the 3rd crotchet must have contained d1.
