Slurs

b. 553-556

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No L.H. slurs in A (→FC,FEEE)

Slurs in GE

..

The addition of the L.H. three-note slurs in b. 553-554 and 555-556, modelled after the R.H. motifs, is a revision of GE, quite frequently used in Breitkopf & Härtel's publications (cf., e.g. b. 572-579). However, in this case it is almost certain that such slurs correspond to Chopin's intention, since he wrote such slurs in analogous b. 557-558 and 559-560. Chopin could have missed the difference in the indications of b. 553-556 and 557-560, as b. 557 opens a new page of A.

2 slurs in A (→FE,FCGE)

No slurs in EE

The missing three-note R.H. slurs in b. 555-556 and 557-558 must be a mistake of EE. Generally, EE include a few slurring irregularities in this fragment that are difficult to explain; see also b. 557-560, 561-566.

Slur in bars 559-560 in EE

The missing L.H. slurs in b. 557-558 and 559-560 is most probably an oversight of the engraver of FE. The presence of the latter in EE indicates a revision or a mistake.

b. 560-579

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

8 longer, 6 shorter slurs in A, literal reading

8 longer, 6 shorter slurs in FC, literal reading

14 longer slurs in FE (contextual interpretation→EE, contextual interpretation)

7 longer, 7 shorter slurs in GE1

14 longer slurs in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The slurs encompassing the ostinato quaver figures in A are of different length: some reach the following crotchet, some do not. Statistically, it is the former that clearly prevail: 8 longer, 6-note slurs to only 4 shorter and 3 questionable ones (we interpret the questionable ones literally as short). The remaining sources do not show traces of Chopin's influence on the range of those slurs; except for minor inaccuracies, FC and GE1 reproduce the text of their Stichvorlagen, while FE (→EE) contain longer slurs only (we discuss b. 574-575 separately due to FE having overlooked the slur). In this situation, we base the main text on the above analysis of the notation of A; taking into account a high degree of structural and functional similarity of the discussed motifs, we suggest uniform, 6-note slurs in all figures.

b. 561-566

Slurs in EE

..

The slurs of EE added in b. 561-562 and 565-566 are contrary to Chopin's intention. It is proven by the same type of slurs having been crossed out in A in the first of those places. According to us, it is even uncertain whether the slurs were an actual original concept of articulation of those motifs, since Chopin could have erroneously marked one similar place too many while adding slurs on that page of A.
