b. 500-504

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add cautionary sharps before f2 in b. 500 and 502 and f1 in b. 504. In b. 502 Chopin started writing a  in A, yet he quickly abandoned it and crossed out the germ of that accidental. The accidentals were gradually added in GE: in b. 500 already in GE1, while in the remaining ones – in GE2 (→GE3). The sharp in b. 500 was added also in FESf.

b. 501-503

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In the main text we add a cautionary  before b2 in b. 501. In A one can see that Chopin crossed out that accidental; however, he inserted a  before b1 in an analogous situation in b. 505. The accidental was added also in EE and GE2 (→GE3). Moreover, we remove the poorly justified  before b on the 3rd beat of b. 503, present in all sources. In this context Chopin was also inconsistent, since he did not write a  in b. 501.

b. 503

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In A one can see a crossing-out of both the second and third crotchet in the L.H. It is difficult to decipher what was crossed out:

  • the 2nd crotchet had 3 or 4 ledger lines; in the latter it would probably be a Terzverschreibung, which Chopin first wanted to correct without rewriting the note;
  • the 3rd crotchet must have contained d1.

b. 504-505

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in bar 504 in A (contextual interpretation→FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

Slur to bar 505 in FC

No slur in GE1

..

The ending of the slur of A is unclear; according to us, the final part of the slur, bent in the opposite direction, is a remaining part of an uncontrolled, further movement of the hand after finishing the two-note slur (like in the entire fragment). It misled Fontana, who led the slur to the next bar in FC, whereas FE (→EE) reproduced that slur in accordance with the scheme. GE1 omitted the slur of FC, which did not fit with the others, while subsequent GE added a slur over the 2nd and 3rd crotchets, undoubtedly intended by Chopin.

b. 516-517

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

All cautionary sharps and naturals in these bars were added by us. Some of them – both in b. 516 and sharps of g2 (grace note) and f3 – were added already in GE1. All the remaining ones as well as the second  of g2 (the last quaver) were added in GE2 (→GE3).
