A later start of the slur in GE3, although seemingly justified, is probably contrary to Chopin's final intention. The traces visible in FE prove that the four-bar slur starting from the 1st quaver resulted from proofreading – originally, these bars were provided with shorter slurs, out of which the first one, encompassing bar 496 only, most probably started after the 1st quaver. In the main text, we give the fingering of FED, written probably by Chopin. A different fingering, written twice in FEH (here and in bars 502-503), may also come from lessons with Chopin.
