Issues : Errors in FE

composition: Op. 16, Rondo in E♭ major

In FE, 3 notes making up the group on the 2nd quaver of the bar are semiquavers, as a result of which the triplet includes 3.5 semiquavers, together with the rest. The mistake was corrected both in GE and EE by shortening the last note to a demisemiquaver. The fact that it was indeed Chopin's intention is proven by a comparison with analogous bar 246. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , GE revisions |

c2 as the last semiquaver in FE (→GE1,EE) is most probably a mistake – cf. analogous bar 251. It is confirmed by the Chopinesque correction performed in pencil in FEJ. In turn, the reviser of GE2 removed the harmonic inconsistency with the L.H. part, yet he did not take into account the melodic structure of the figuration. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , Errors in EE , Errors in GE , Terzverschreibung error , Annotations in FEJ |

The version of FE (→GE1,EE) with a d1-b1 sixth is most probably erroneous, which is indicated by a comparison with analogous bar 287, in which there is a fifth. It is also the change to d1-b1 written in FEJ that supports the thesis that the majority of the sources contain a mistake. At the same time, it was rather an e1-b1 fifth that corresponded to Chopin's original idea, since d1 in the second chord required the use of a . According to us, an additional argument in favour of a fifth is a characteristic juxtaposition of the c1-a1 sixth with the e1-b1 fifth (bars 117, 120, 125, 141), which appears a few times in this theme – wherever the melody features a1 and b1 against the A major and E7 chords. Taking into account the above, in the main text we give an e1-b1 fifth. That version was introduced also in GE2. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Annotations in teaching copies , Errors in FE , GE revisions , Annotations in FEJ |

In FE (→EE1), there is no restoring c3. The unquestionable oversight, probably repeated after [A], was corrected in GE and EE2 (→EE3). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE , Omissions to cancel alteration , GE revisions , Errors repeated in EE |

It seems unlikely that Chopin would have wanted to change here a fixed accompaniment scheme with E, e and B notes as the ostinato bass figure. Therefore, the g note featured in the sources as the 2nd quaver is almost certainly a typical Terzverschreibung mistake. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in FE , Terzverschreibung error , Errors repeated in GE , Errors repeated in EE |
