Dot & slur in A & GE2

Slur in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The staccato dot and the slur, which specify the articulation within the last phrase of this period in A, were replaced in GE1 (→FEEE) with a slur over the group of quavers. According to us, the change cannot come from Chopin, and it is certainly one of numerous obvious inaccuracies in the reproduction of slurs by the engraver of GE1.

R.H. dots in A

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

Dots in bar 166 in GE2

..

No staccato dots over the first quavers in bars 162 and 166 is certainly an oversight of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE). The mistake was partially corrected in GE2, by adding a dot in bar 162 (also in the L.H.).

Slur in bar 173 in A & GE2

Slur in bar 172 in GE1 (→FE)

2 slurs in EE

..

The absence of the slur in bar 173 in GE1 (→FE) is certainly a mistake. However, it is probably not an oversight, but a "mirror" mistake (reverse sign): instead of placing the slur to the right of the bar line, the engraver printed it on the left-hand side, where it makes no sense in this context (cf. Waltz in C minor Op. 64 no. 2, bars 76-77). In EE the slur was added in the right place, but the one in bar 172 was also preserved. GE2 has a version compliant with A

Slurs in A (bar 182)

Slur in GE1 (→FE)

Slur in EE

Slur in GE2

..

The slur of GE1 (→FE) – the same in both bars – is probably an attempt to interpret the short, bottom slur in bar 182 (cf. bars 178-180), applied generally to both bars. In turn, the version of EE is an interpretation of these slurs – certainly arbitrary – in which, on the one hand, one wanted to preserve a close similarity to the version of the base text (FE), and, on the other hand, to relate it to a possibly natural performance. GE2 reproduced the whole-bar slurs of A, without the bottom slur in bar 182.

Tie to a1 in A & GE2

Slur under 3rd beat in GE1

Slur to a1 in bar 196 in FE (→EE)

..

The version of GE stems from a misunderstanding of the notation of A – the tie of ain bars 195-196 was reproduced as a slur of the top voice in bar 195. The fact that the slur is led to the minim in bar 196 in FE (→EE) is owed to the proofreading, possibly a Chopin one, whose aim was most probably to restore the version of A, yet it was implemented inaccurately. A possibility that Chopin resigned from sustaining a1, and that he wanted to combine both parts of this transitional phrase by extending the slur (cf. the adjacent note), seems to be much less likely. Therefore, we adopt the version of A to the main text.
