Issues : Errors in GE

b. 102-103

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

..

In GE, the 2nd and 3rd triplets in bar 102 and the 1st and 2nd triplets in bar 103 were provided with an octave sign, so they are written an octave too high. The mistake stemmed from a change performed in the notation of this fragment – Chopin wrote it using an octave sign, whereas in GE1, planning on omitting 8 - - -, the notes were printed at the actual pitch, yet the octave sign was left by mistake. The error was corrected, probably by Chopin, in FE (→EE1), but it was unnoticed by the reviser of GE2. The erroneous octave sign was introduced also in EE2; EE3 restored the correct text.

L.H. long accents in A & GE2

R.H. long accent in GE1 (→FE)

R.H. long accent & L.H. accents in EE

..

Out of two long accents under the chords in the left hand only the first was reproduced in GE1 (→FEEE) and under the part of the R.H. EE added both accents in the L.H., probably by analogy with bars 90 and 92 and 114 and 116. GE2 restored the notation of A.

Staccato dot in A & GE2

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

We consider the oversight of the staccato dot in GE1 (→FEEE) to be the engraver's mistake.

No mark in A

Staccato dot in GE (→FEEE)

..

According to us, the staccato dot added in GE (→FEEE) is either a revision or, which seems to be more likely, a mistake of the engraver.

1 slur in A & GE2

2 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

Breaking the slur between these bars is a characteristic inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 (after all, the two-bar slur in bars 125-126 is already a result of proofreading – the remaining elements of original slurs show that each of these bars was most probably embraced with a separate slur). The continuous, four-bar slur written in A was restored in GE2. See also bars 128-129.
