Slurs in bars 353 & 357 in A

Dots under slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

Same as in bars 177-189, in the main text we give indications – slurs and dots – introduced probably by Chopin in the proofreading of GE (→FEEE). In A, in this fragment, written already very hastily, slurs are only in bar 353 (over the sixths) and 357 (a whole-bar slur).

[a tempo] suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we suggest adding an indication returning the regular course of music after a temporary halt. In this section of A, Chopin omitted a number of agogic markings, including all a tempo markings – cf. bars 313, 317 and 325.

Double slur in A

Single slur in GE & EE

No slur in FE

..

It is unclear how the two slurs in A are to be understood: their range is practically identical. Therefore, it seems that Chopin either wrote one of them by mistake or wanted to replace one of them with another. This is how it was interpreted in GE, reproducing only the top slur. We give this version in the main text, since all following similar figures have only one slur, mostly the top one. The absence of the slur in FE must be a mistake, corrected in EE, probably on the basis of comparison with analogous bars.

b3 repeated in A (→GE)

b3 tied in FE (→EE)

..

According to us, the tie of bis a result of a mistake of the engraver of FE (→EE). It would be difficult to assume that Chopin would have liked to deprive this figure of its initial fourth that is key for capturing the relationship to the antithetic figure, beginning with a fifth, in the preceding bar.

Long accent in A

Short accent in GE & EE

No mark in FE

..

Shortened accents are a very frequent inaccuracy of GE, whereas the omission of the sign in FE is a patent mistake, revised then in EE.
