Slurs

b. 1

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

R.H. slur from minim in A

Slurs from minim in GE & FED

Different slurs in FE

Slurs from crotchet in EE

..

In the main text we include the slur for the L.H. added in a proofreading of GE – cf. an analogous slur in A in bars 91-92 – even though it is not entirely certain whether it was added by Chopin. The undoubtedly erroneously shortened slur in the R.H. in FE made the reviser of EE perform a similar change in the part of the L.H. The mistake of FE was corrected with an entry in FED, performed in pencil.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Two slurs in A

One slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

Both source versions of the slurring of this phrase were written by Chopin in A: two slurs in the discussed place, one in analogous bars 92-93. The slur in GE (→FEEE) was corrected, perhaps by Chopin, however, the change applied not to the correctly rendered slurs of A but to other, erroneous slurring – the traces indicate that the original slur reached the 2nd crotchet in bar 3. Therefore, in the main text we retain the version of A, regarding the version in the editions as an equivalent variant.

b. 3-4

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

R.H. slur from 2nd beat in A

R.H. slur from 3rd beat in GE1 (→FE)

Slurs from 2nd beat in EE & GE2

..

The slur of GE1 (→FE) is clearly erroneous (put one crotchet too far), which was corrected by the revisers of EE and GE2. In both editions a slur for the L.H. was added, which we consider a correct decision, justified by the authentic slurs in the ending of this movement and by a possible Chopin proofreading of GE1 in bars 1-2.

b. 4-5

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Slur up to bar 5 in A, EE & GE2

Slur in bar 4 in GE1 (→FE)

..

A shorter slur of GE1 is (together with the previous one) a clear example of carelessness presented by the engraver of GE1 at the time of handling the slurring written in A.

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Slurs from 2nd quaver in A & GE2

Slurs from 1st quaver in GE1 (→FE)

Different slurs in EE

..

In A the vast majority of the beginnings of the slurs in the L.H., both in the figures embracing the whole bar and in the half-bar ones, does not include the bass note, usually provided with a staccato dot. Despite the fact that Chopin would not always put them precisely (e.g., a slur in bar 8), their systematical reproduction in GE1 (→FEEE) as whole- or half-bar rather does not correspond to his intention (cf. the characterization of GE1), which was noticed in GE2.
