b. 80

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

..

The eight-note figure filling the 3rd quaver of the bar was written in A by Chopin as a demisemiquaver septuplet. The patent mistake was partially corrected in GE2, by writing it as an octuplet of demisemiquavers. According to us, there are no reasons for such an atypical notation, hence we replace the septuplet with a regular group of hemidemisemiquavers. In FE (→EE) the second note was overlooked, which removed the incompatibility of the notation with the actual state.

FE (→EE)

On the 3rd beat of the bar GE1 contains up to three errors:

  • incorrect accidentals,
  • no mordent,
  • semiquavers instead of the dotted rhythm at the end of the figure.

Only the first two were corrected in GE2.
In FE (→EE) Chopin corrected the first while in the second part of the group he introduced a different version, which, being the latest, we adopt in the main text.

Semiquavers in A (→GEFE)

Demisemiquavers in EE

..

It was probably the lack of the triplet marking over the first group of semiquavers that induced the reviser of EE to arbitrarily change the rhythm.

Accent in A

No mark in GE (→FEEE)

Our variant suggestion

..

Omission of the accent in the editions can be considered justified if we take into consideration that, theoretically, it applies to the note that is not played at all, since it is sustained with a tie. From the practical point of view, the trill makes it possible for it to be accented, hence in the main text we suggest the sign in a variant form. It may also be that the missing accent is a result of the engraver's oversight or possibly of an editorial revision.

Accent in A (→GE)

Our variant suggestion

..

It is hard to assume whether the missing accent in FE (→EE) is one of the results of the Chopin proofreading on the 3rd beat of the bar, or whether it is only its unintended side effect or simply an oversight of the engraver.
