b. 164

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Accent over c3 in A

Accent over third in GE (→FEEE)

Our alternative suggestion (long accent)

..

The accent in A certainly concerns c3, and not the d2-fthird, as it was reproduced in the editions (cf. analogous bar 314 in the recapitulation). It is also unclear what kind of accent Chopin meant here, long or short. The sign is very similar to the short accents at the beginning of bars 162 and 164, yet it also does not differ significantly from the long accents in bars 159 and 161. Since the accent in an analogous bar in the recapitulation is clearly long, we suggest a version with such an accent also in this place.

b. 164

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No slurs in A

Slurs from 1st quaver in GE1 (→FEEE)

Slurs from 2nd quaver in GE2

..

The absence of slurs in this bar is undoubtedly Chopin's mistake in A. The slurs – half-bar-long – were added already in GE1 (→FEEE), by analogy with adjacent bars. However, it is highly unlikely that such a range would correspond to Chopin's intention – cf. bar 159.

b. 165-168

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

c2 & c2 in A (→GE)

d2 & b1 in FE (→EE)

..

The version of FE (→EE), fully analogous with the corresponding fragment of the recapitulation (bars 315-318), was introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of FE1. Both versions are, according to us, musically equal, yet showing respect for Chopin's decision, in the main text we give the later, proofread version. The reason for the change could have been pianistic convenience – following the proofreading, the number of differences between the subsequent appearances of similar two-bar phrases in bars 165-166, 167-168, 315-316 and 317-318 was significantly reduced.

b. 165-168

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slurs from 2nd quaver in A & GE2

Slurs from 1st quaver in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In GE1 (→FEEE), the fact of beginning all slurs over the half-bar figures of the accompaniment in bars 165-166 and 168 from the 1st quaver is a typical arbitrary action of the engraver of GE1. GE2 restored the notation of A. We discuss the atypical situation in bar 167 separately.
