b. 66

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Four-note chord in GE, FE (→EE) & GE2

Octave in GE1

..

The absence of middle notes of the chord is certainly an error of the engraver of GE1.

b. 66-67

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

Slurs in GC, contextual interpretation

Slur in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE

..

The slur starting in bar 67 is written in GC in an inaccurate manner, so one can assume that it embraces the first chord of the bar too. The clear ending of the previous slur over this chord indicates, however, that the new slur is probably supposed to start from the 2nd chord, as it was clearly marked in analogous bar 195 in all sources. In GE the previous slur was ended in bar 66, whereas the new was started from a2 at the beginning of bar 67, which is certainly an arbitrary interpretation of the notation of GC. The continuous slur in FE (→EE) may be authentic, however, one cannot exclude that it is also an attempt to interpret unclear slurs of the base text, in this case [A].

Ties in GC & FE (→EE)

Tie & slur (?) in GE

..

Incorrectly placed ties in GE – no tie to a2 and a 'tie' between f2-b1 – may be attributed to the engraver's distraction.

c2-c3 in GC (→GE)

e2-e3 in FE (→EE)

..

The comparison with the respective bar of the recapitulation (bar 196), as well as with analogous motifs in bars 52 and 180 and 50, 66, 178 and 194, makes us consider the version of GC to be erroneous.

Dashes in GC & GE2

No dashes in FE (→EE) & GE1

..

The premature ending of the dashes is certainly an error of GE1. According to us, also in the case of FE (→EE) the engraver's inaccuracy seems to be the most likely the reason of the absence of the dashes – they were led only to the end of the line of the text (cf., e.g., the Etude in C minor, Op. 25 No. 12, bars 33-39).
