Pedalling

b. 12

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

 in GC (→GE)

No sign in FE (→GE)

..

No  sign in FE (→EE) is certainly an oversight of the engraver – there is a respective sign in analogous bar 200, but both bars were printed on the basis of the one and only notation of [A].

b. 13-14

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

One pedal in GC

Two pedals in FE (→EE)

 sign in GE

Our variant suggestion

..

In some of the sources – GC and GE – the pedalling of these bars is written clearly inaccurately, as holding the pedal beginning on the 2nd beat of bar 13 longer than one crotchet leads to an unjustified mix of harmonies, as far as the sound is concerned. The difference between the sources based directly on [A] – GC and FE – is most easily explained with an oversight of the copyist, although other explanations are also possible. On the other hand, the unnecessarily complex pedalling of FE (→EE) in a faster tempo, without an audible error, may also not entirely reflect Chopin's intention – cf. similar bars 32-34. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, leaving a possible use of pedal on the 2nd beat of bar 13 at the discretion of the perfomer.

b. 55-56

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No sign in GC (→GE) & FE

 in EE

..

In the main text we give a  sign, added in the base text to EE probably by Chopin. See also bars 243-244.

Pedalling suggested by the editors

In all sources, the pedalling is most probably written inaccurately, whereas the signs in GC (→GE) in bar 75 are certainly misplaced. In the main text, we use the notation of FE (→EE), however, we move the change of pedal in bar 74 one crotchet earlier (this possible inaccuracy, present also in GC, can be probably blamed on the unclear notation of [A]).

The  sign, written in the sources before the E1-E octave, was most probably supposed to conern the aforementioned octave (Chopin would often write the pedal's press sign before a low placed note). The notation of FE could be interpreted in such a way, however, in the remaining sources the  sign is clearly placed under the chord on the 2nd beat of the bar and not before the last octave. In the main text we correct this highly likely misunderstanding).
