Pedalling in GC

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

Pedalling in GE1

Pedalling in GE2

Pedalling suggested by the editors

The pedalling of bars 73-77 must have been inaccurately written in [A], as both in GC and – to a lesser extent – FE (→EE) some of the signs are undoubtedly misplaced. A comparison with a similar fragment of the recapitulation (bars 261-263) allows to state that the basic scheme, compatible with the harmonic narrative and hemiola rhythmic structure, consists of pedals embracing two crotchets, chord and an octave. The scheme is rendered invalid only in bar 76, in which the octave on the 3rd beat of the bar does not create a pair with the preceding chord, but with the octave in the next bar (see the note to this bar).
The pedalling of FE is compatible with the scheme, except for the change of pedal in bar 74, placed later than in the above scheme. In the main text we suggest a respective shift of signs.
The pedalling of GC, repeated in GE1 with a mistake in bar 75 (the  sign was placed under the 3rd crotchet, whereas the  sign, which is supposed to be there, was omitted), except for the described inaccuracy in bar 74, includes clearly erroneous indications also in the next bar.
