b. 31

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

espress. in Amar

No indication in GC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

The espress. indication (i.e. espressivo), present only in Amar and placed somehow instead of  of the final version, suggests a performance of a slightly more distinct shape of the phrase (cf. bar 36). When performing the entire Sonata or Marche, such an interpretation can be, according to us, used in one out of two repetitions of these bars intended by Chopin (possibly also in bars 47-54). It can be also understood as an indication complementing the final dynamic indication.

Half-bar pedalling in Amar

Whole-bar pedalling in GC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

The pedalling in Amar is certainly earlier and already at the time of writing this fragment Chopin realised that it is better not to change pedal in the bars based on one harmony – he deleted the pedal change in bar 34.

Grace note in Amar

No ornament in GC (→GE) & FE (→EE)

..

On the available photography of Amar, it is hard to state what type of grace note is written here. We assume that it is a common slashed quaver, which in the main sources is present, e.g., in bars 44 and 45. Preparing the Sonata for publication, Chopin resigned from this ornament at the beginning of the D major section, however, at the time of proofreading, he most probably decided to use it at the return of the first eight-bar section, in bar 49.
