A - Autograph

Date: VIII-IX 1847
Title: [Valse] || Nro 3
Dedication: Mlle la Comtesse Catherine Branicka

A Stichvorlage, with clearly visible signs, probably performed in pencil, with which the engraver of FE marked the planned distribution of the text into great staves and pages. A is written quite densly, wich a minor number of corrections in the form of deletions. Among these that are legible on the available photographs, the most significant include:

  • change of the shape of the accompaniment in bars 13-14 – replacing the typical bass-chord-chord scheme with a two-bar wave of dyads,
  • change of the bass note in bar 37 from to c with a corresponding it correction of the middle note of the chords on the 2nd and 3rd beats,
  • removal of the chord in the L.H. on the 3rd beat of bar 54,
  • change of the direction of stems, perhaps also the content of crotchets in the L.H. in bars 61-62,
  • removal of an indication (agogic?) over bars 73-78,
  • removal of the d1 from the chord at the end of bar 84,
  • change of the 4th quaver in the R.H. from f2 to d2 in bars 16 and 124.

Chopin introduced further minor improvements while proofreading FE.

A is not free from mistakes, e.g.:

  • numerous inaccuracies in the notation of accidentals, generally repeated after As,
  • new oversights, e.g., of naturals in bars 143 and 144,
  • a possible oversight of ties sustaining e1 in bars 109-110 and 125-126.

In mUltimate Chopin we present digitalised, black-and-white photographs of A from the legacy of Prof. Jan Ekier.
