GE2Ab - Second German edition of Waltz in A♭ major

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: 1861
Plate number: 10098 (7717)
Title: Valse
Dedication: None

A comparison with the history of separate German editions of the Waltz in D major, No. 1 – the chronological counterpart of GE2Ab is GE4Db – could suggest existence of an undiscovered impression (edition?) between GE1Ab and GE2Ab. However, it seems to be unlikely, considering the fact that GE1Ab (with different variants of the cover) was available until GE2Ab appeared and probably still later.

GE2Ab introduced numerous changes and additions with respect to GE1Ab, some are corrections of mistakes and oversights and some are completely arbitrary, e.g.:

  • a dynamic hairpin in bars 7-8 was added,
  • the erroneous top note of the 3rd crotchet in bar 13 was corrected,
  • a slur in bars 15-22 was added,
  •  in bars 16-18 was added,
  • pedalling in bar 19 was completed,
  • a cautionary  before g1 in bar 49 was added.

Not all mistakes were corrected, even the ones that are absent in the editions of the entire Op. 64, e.g.:

  • an erroneous chord on the 2nd beat of bar 146.
