b. 26

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

The cautionary  before d2 at the end of bar 26 is in all sources. A respective sign in the L.H. was added only in GE and EE2 (→EE3).

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Quaver in A (→FCGE)

Crotchet in FE & EE

..

The value of quaver for g2 is most probably the original version, inadvertently left in A (→FCGE). It is indicated by the deleted slurs visible in A, grouping the chords in two in this bar. The value of crotchet was introduced probably in the base text to EE and in proofreading of FE. Cf. the adjacent note.

b. 27

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Third a-c1 in A (→FE)

Fifth f-c1 in FC (→GE) & EE

..

Both source versions of the last quaver in the L.H. are a result of corrections, certainly (A) or most probably (FC) authentic. Out of these two practically equal versions, to the main text we choose the a-c1 third written in A (→FE). According to our evaluation, the corrections in the L.H. visible in A also in the next two bars prove a thought-out decision of the composer, including all sound aspects of the accompaniment in this fragment.

b. 27

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

Short slur in A (→FE) & EE1 (→EE2)

Longer slur in FC (→GE)

Both slurs in EE3

..

The visible in A (→FE) and EE little slur in the 2nd half of the bar was overlooked in FC (→GE). Instead of that, Chopin added in this copy a longer slur, embracing the entire bar. The slur was introduced also in EE3, thanks to which the edition, as the only source, presents the closest to Chopin's intention version of the rhythm and slurring in this bar. In the main text, we omit the shorter slur, as, according to us, Chopin replaced it with the added longer one. Moreover, the notation of A is ambiguous – it is not clear which components of the chords were supposed to be embraced with it – we assume that they were b1 and a1
