b. 23-24

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No slurs in AI

One slur in FE (→GE1GE2)

Two slurs in EE & GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

The slur of FE at the beginning of bar 24 (on the new line) very clearly indicates continuation of the preceding one and this is how it was understood in GE1 (→GE2). However, in EE it was the slur of FE in bar 23, ending on the last semiquaver, that was considered as correct. The separation of the slurs in GE3 (→GE4GE5) is probably a mistake.

b. 23-24

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No signs in AI

Two  in FE

 in GE1 (→GE1aGE2GE3)

 in GE4 (→GE5)

Two  in EE

 suggested by the editors

..

In bars 21-26 the dynamic signs were not marked in AI. In bars 23-24, FE (→EE) has two separate signs, the second out of which (in bar 24) was, however, not included in GE, which can mean that Chopin added it in the last proofreading of FE. According to us, the melodically homogeneous context suggests that  in bar 24 is to be understood as continuation of the previous one.

b. 24

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

e b-c1-e1 in AI

e b-c1-e1 in FE (→EE2EE3)

e b-c1-e1 in GE & EE4

Our variant suggestion

..

Each of the three source versions may correspond to Chopin's intention, yet at the same time in each of them there may be errors, as in the case of AI and FE and previous EE,s, or a foreign intervention, which most probably took place in GE and EE4. The e quaver is the original version and there is no doubt that it was then changed by Chopin to e. In the main text we suggest b-c1-e as the last chord in the R.H., emphasising that the sound of the topmost note is uncertain.

b. 24

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

..

We add a cautionary  before a1. The sign was added in GE3 (→GE4GE5) and EE4. In AI there is no cautionary  before d1.

b. 25-26

composition: Op. 10 No 4, Etude in C♯ minor

No fingering in AI

Fingering in FE (→GE,EE)

Our suggestion

..

The fingering given in the main text comes from FE (→GE,EE). The last numeral was repeated in these sources also at the beginning of bar 26, perhaps due to the fact that it is on a new line. We do not give it in the main text.
