EE1 - First English edition
Publisher: | Wessel & Co |
Date: | IV 1836 |
Plate number: | W & CoNo1645 |
Title: | Souvenir de la Pologne, | 4e. Recueil de Quatre Mazurkas, | No. 1 |
Dedication: | Monsieur le Comte de Perthuis |
In EE1, the text of FE1 was reproduced with a number of inaccuracies (such as missing slurs in in bar 3 and 64) and with certain changes and additions usually made on the basis of comparing analogous places (e.g.. in bar 21, a slur in bars 26-27, rhythms in bars 39-40). In some situations it is not obvious whether the versions of EE1 result from the engraver's inaccurate rendition of the text or from revisions, e.g. accents in bars 33-36 and analogous bars. Chopin did not participate in the preparation of that edition.
EE1 has most of the typical features of Wessel's publications: notation of grace notes and minims or an arbitrarily added title.
EE2. Beginning from 1845, subsequent impressions of EE were published with minor changes in the Mazurka in C no. 2 and B flat no. 4. Due to the fact that an individual title page of the opus was replaced with a collective one, the dedication was omitted in EE2. As no changes were introduced to the musical text of the Mazurka in G minor, we do not list EE2 as a separate source for that Mazurka. Photos of the pages with the Mazurka in G minor in the copy of EE2 can be viewed as the initial pages of the Mazurka in C major.
