Slurs

b. 123

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur from a in A (→GC,EE)

Slur from b in FE & GE1

Slur from g in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The earlier start of slur in FE results from misunderstanding the notation in A, otherwise quite clear at this place. A similar inaccuracy in GE is more justified by the mutual relations between the slur and notes in GC which served as Stichvorlage. The retouch of the beginning of slur introduced in GE2 (→GE3) aimed at clarifying the voice-leading.

b. 126-127

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur in A (→EE,GCGE)

No slur in FE

..

The lack of slur results certainly from an oversight by the engraver of FE.

b. 129

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Slur from d1 in A (→FE,EE)

Slur from c in GC (→GE)

..

The earlier beginning of slur in GC (→GE) is an unintended result of a slight displacement of its origin.

b. 130

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

2 slurs in A (→EE,EE)

1 slur in GC (→GE)

..

In A the slur in the L.H. was corrected – Chopin originally wrote one slur embracing the upper voice of the L.H. from the middle of bar 129 to the middle of bar 131, then he corrected it by dividing it into two parts in the middle of bar 130. This corrected variant was included in FE and EE, while in GC there is a version with one slur starting earlier, that is from the quaver in the bottom voice, which was then repeated in GE. In the main text we give the corrected version of A.

b. 132-133

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Fragment of slur in A (→GC)

Slurs in FE

Slurs in EE

No slurs in GE

..

In both A (→GC) and EE, starting a new line resulted in inattention and leaving unfinished fragments of slurs (in A in bar 131, in EE in bar 132). FE completed the slurs in keeping with the analogous bars 125-127 and the R.H. slurs. This might have been done by the reviser or even the engraver. We give this undoubtedly right version in the main text. However, GE not only left bars 132-133 without slurs but omitted the second one in bar 131.
