b. 69

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

 in AI

 in A

 cresc. in FE (→GE,EE)

..

Same as in bars 29 and 38-40, the engraver of FE separated the  mark and the cresc. indication. In the main text we preserve Chopin's characteristic notation.

Slur in A, literal reading

Contextual interpretation of slur in A (→FEGE), slur in EE3 (→EE4

..

It is not entirely clear whether the longer slur of A was really meant to reach until the beginning of bar 70 (the left end of the slur is also written with panache). Taking into account the notation of analogous bar 16, which does not raise any doubts, in the main text we give the slur in the version of FE (→GE,EE); overlooked in EE2). Less careful notation in bars 62-72 – see e.g. bars 65-666770.

b. 70

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Two  signs in A

FE (→GE1GE1a) & EE3 (→EE4)

One sign in GE2 (→#GE3G4→GE5)

Slur &  suggested by the editors

..

Two  signs in A – reproduced slightly inaccurate in FE (→GE1GE1a) and EE3 (→EE4) – may be a result of Chopin's mistake, who, while adding (probably in a hurry) the performance indications, wrote hairpins instead of a slur. It is indicated by the comparison with analogous bar 17. Due to this fact, in the main text we suggest a slur instead of the top  sign. Chopin indications were considered as erroneous already in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5).

b. 71-72

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Possible short accents in A (→FEGE)

Long accents in A (probable interpretation) & EE3 (→EE4)

..

The type of the accents written by Chopin in A is not clear in these bars. According to us, the use of long accents is more likely in this context.

b. 71

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

dim. in A (→FEGE)

dim. in EE2

sempre legato in EE3 (→EE4)

..

The arrangement of the dim. indication in EE2 in bar 72 is certainly a mistake. In the subsequent EE, the erroneous indication was removed, yet in bar 71, instead of dim.sempre legato was arbitrarily added after bar 18.
