b. 71-76

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Semiquavers in AI & FE (→GE,EE)

Additional crotchets in A

Our suggestion

..

In the main text, we include the extensions of the bass notes written in A in bars 71 and 73-76. We also add a relevant crotchet in bar 72, probably overlooked by Chopin – cf. analogous bar 19.

b. 73-74

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

..

In AI, bar 74 is not written out – bar 73 is provided with a 'bis' indication, meaning its double performance followed by bar 75. It slightly complicates the task to determine Chopin's intention concerning, e.g., arrangement of the dim. indication.

A & c1 in AI

c & c1 in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

Lack of the  before the 6th semiquaver of the bottom voice in AI means that in both bars it is to be a c1. Knowing the final version, one can doubt whether Chopin simply forgot about the  before this note. The use of as the 5th semiquaver in the L.H. is, however, a strong argument for the authenticity of the literally interpreted version of AI.

In A (→FEEE2EE3), there is no  before the last note in the R.H., which is a patent inaccuracy of the notation. In GE1 (→GE1a), the sign was completed in bar 74, while in the remaining editions – in both bars.

b. 73

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

No marking in AI

in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

Lack of  may be considered as a patent inaccuracy of AI, as in the next bar there is dim. in this manuscript, which is not in the final version. It may mean that at the stage of writing AI, Chopin had a slightly different dynamic concept of the ending, in which the final attenuation begins clearly later.

b. 73-74

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

No slurs in AI & A

Slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

..

The slurs over the semiquavers in the 2nd halves of the bars were added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE).
