b. 65-66

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

No slur in AIFE (→GE,EE)

Slur in A

..

The missing slur is almost certainly one of numerous inaccuracies of FE (→GE,EE).

b. 66

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Accent in AI

No marks in A (→FE1GE1,#EE2)

  in FE2

  & accent in GE1a (→GE2GE3GE4GE5) & EE3 (→EE4)

..

The accent in AI, in which the bar is marked as repetition of bars 5 or 13, presents the original version of the indications of the motifs in bars 2, 3, 5 and analog. In the main text, we give the pair of   hairpins, added with the slurs in a proofreading of FE2. The signs correspond to the final concept of the indications of these motifs, introduced in a proofreading of FE1 in six places of the first part of the Etude. In GE1a (→GE2GE3GE4GE5) and EE3 (→EE4), the indications were completed also in this bar, by analogy with bar 13; at the same time, the accent on the ecrotchet was included.

b. 66

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

No slurs in AI & FE1 (→GE1,EE2)

Two slurs in A, FE2 & EE3 (→EE4)

One slur in GE1a (→GE2GE3GE4GE5)

..

In the main text we give two slurs written in A and added then in a proofreading of FE2, as they were overlooked in FE1 (→GE1,EE2); see the adjacent note. The striking absence was corrected both in the subsequent GE, by adding one slur by analogy with bar 5, and in EE3 (→EE4), in which two slurs were added.

b. 67

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

Semiquavers in AI & FE (→GE,EE2)

Crotchet in A

Semiquavers with slur in EE3 (→EE4)

..

The version of A seems to be only a temporary deviation from the original concept, as at the time of proofreading FE (→GE,EE), Chopin returned the semiquaver figure, used before in AI (as repetition of the motif from bar 14). We add a slur over the semiquavers, by analogy with the slur added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE) in bar 14, as well as with the slurs in analogous bars 15 (proofreading of FE) and 68 (A). This addition was already introduced in EE3 (→EE4).

b. 67-68

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

No marks in AI & EE2

Short accents in A (literal reading) & GE

Long accents in A (probably interpretation)

Different accents in FE & EE4

Long accent in EE3

..

Both the placement of the sign in bar 67 and the shape of the accents in both bars are, according to us, a result of a less careful notation of the final part of the Etude by Chopin. Therefore, in the main text we suggest long accents modelled on the notation of A in bars 14-15
