Slurs

b. 46

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

Slur in A & EE

No slur in FE (→GE)

..

The slur embracing the progression of thirds in the L.H. was overlooked in FE (→GE). The mark was added in EE, probably in analogy to bar 44.

b. 47

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

No slurs in A (→FEGE1)

Slurs in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

We consider the lack of slurs in A (→FEGE1) to be Chopin's oversight. The revisers of EE and GE2 (→GE3GE4) were of a similar opinion, as they added the slurs (and an accent).

Different interpretation of FE (→GE)

The sources do not allow for a clear-cut determination of the intended by Chopin articulation and phrasing concerning the transition of bars 49 and 50. In the main text we give the version of A, as it is undoubtedly authentic and written faultlessly (unequivocal). The ambiguous version of FE may be interpreted in many ways; we give preference to the one in which the slur beginning in bar 50 remained unchanged, probably being a result of Chopin's correction (see bars 51-52). This is how the notation was interpreted in EE. Another one was adopted in GE and we present a third one as an additional possibility.

b. 49-50

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

Slurs in A & probable interpretation of FE (→EE)

Different interpretation of FE (→GE)

..

The slurs of FE are unclear – in bar 49 (at the end of the line) the slur suggests a continuation, which is not confirmed by the slur in bar 50, beginning from the 1st semiquaver in the bar. It is probably a result of an error of the engraver of FE. In each of the editions based on FE the inaccuracy was handled in a different way (similarly as in the case of the slurs in the L.H.). In the main text we give the unequivocal version of A.

b. 51-52

composition: Op. 10 No 7, Etude in C major

End of slur in A, interpretation

FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A the slur – led over the notes – ends over the 2nd quaver in bar 51, which certainly stems from the inability to lead it further due to the part of the R.H., written on the lower stave. However, it is not certain how far Chopin would have led it if it had not been for graphic difficulties. We assume that, similarly as in analogous bar 49, the slur was supposed to end on the last quaver in bar 51. The slur of FE (→GE,EE), led to the beginning of bar 52, was most probably added by Chopin at the time of proofreading FE. It is of minor significance whether Chopin extended the slur reflecting the notation of A or added a new slur after having noticed its absence.
