Slurs

b. 32

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Slur in A, interpretation

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we give the slur of A, probably overlooked in FE (→GE,EE). We interpret the beginning of the slur in accordance with the sense of music.

b. 33-36

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Slur in A, interpretation

FE (→GE,EE)

..

The slur of A, despite the fact that it begins from the 3rd or 4th semiquaver in bar 33, is certainly to be interpreted as embracing the entire 4 bars. In FE (→GE,EE) the slur in bar 33 was omitted, which is a patent error (in FE the bar is at the end of the line). Although Chopin did not add the slur in bar 33 while proofreading FE, he included sempre legatissimo. However, according to us, this indication does not have to be considered only as a substitute of the slur, which in fact does not limit to determine just the articulation.

b. 43-44

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

No slur in A (→FEGE,EE)

Our suggestion

..

Lack of the slur may be a result of distraction at the transition to the next page in A (on which there is not a single slur). Therefore, we suggest to add the slur on the basis of bars 41-42.

b. 45-46

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Slur in A

Inaccurate slur in FE (→GE1)

Slur in GE2 & EE

No slur in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

Our suggestion

..

In the sources of undeniable authenticity – A and FE – the slur is inaccurately written. In both sources it generally includes bar 46, yet in A it most probably reaches the 1st quaver in bar 47, while in FE (→GE1) it suggests a continuation from bar 45 (written in the previous line). In GE2 and EE the sign of FE was repeated, shortening its left end to avoid the notation's inaccuracy. In the main text we propose a slur embracing the entire phrase.

b. 47-48

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

No slur in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE)

The slur in the editions is certainly an addition made by Chopin during a proofreading of FE.
