In the main text we give the title and dedication in the undoubtedly authentic version adopted in FE. The extensions of both the title (in GE and EE) and the dedication (in EE) most probably come from the editors. See the Etude in C major, No. 1, bar 1.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

In the main text for bars 1-2 and analog. we give the fingering written by Chopin in A (bars 1-2 and 5), as the lack of the 2nd digit in bar 2 in FE (→GE) must be the engraver's oversight. In EE Fontana completed Chopin's indications, adding digits next to each note in bars 1-2 and 9-10. According to us, the use of the 5th finger on the 8th semiquaver in bar 1 by Chopin suggests the 2nd finger for the next one and not the 1st one, as written by Fontana.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

In the main text in bar 3 we give the fingering from A without brackets. It was also reproduced in FE (→GE), however, omitting, probably inadvertently, the last digit. This reduced fingering version is also in EE, in which it was additionally repeated in analogous bar 11. Moreover, that edition adds digits in the further part of bar 3. In the main text, apart from the digits drawn from A, we consider a different fingering written by Chopin in bars 3-4 in FED.

Numeral 1 on first note in A

Numeral on penultimate note in FE (→GE,EE)

Both numerals suggested by the editors

..

Lack of the fingering digit over the 1st note is most probably an error of the engraver of FE (→GE,EE). Moreover, the status of the last digit in the editions is also not entirely clear in this bar. In A there are traces of a correction in this place, which could have been considered as '1' (perhaps Chopin started writing another a3, yet he erased it, having noticed the mistake). However, we believe the explanation that Chopin added this reasonable and facilitating fluent reading digit in a proofreading of FE to be more plausible. In the main text we consider both discussed '1's.

Slurs in A

FE (→GE,EE)

Our alternative suggestion

..

The slur in A in the 2nd half of bar 24 undoubtedly reaches the 1st note in bar 25. Also the relevant slur in bar 25 (the last one in the text's line) suggests a continuation in the following bar, in which, however, it does not end. In the editions the first of the slurs was omitted, which is a patent error, while the second embraced only five last semiquavers in bar 25, which is probably the laziest way of interpretation. Due to the changes of slurs and articulation at the beginning of these bars, we suggest two unified slurrings to choose from: longer slurs in the main text (at the same time, it is the most probable interpretation of A) and shorter ones as an additional possibility.
