b. 28

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Beginning of slur in A (→FEEE2EE3)

GE & EE4

Our suggestion

..

By shortening the slur, the engravers of GE and EE4 probably considered the slur of FE as inaccurate. In the main text we try to render the plausible sense of the literally interpreted notation of A (→FEEE2EE3) in a possibly legible way.

b. 28-32

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

No pedalling in A

Pedalling in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

GE3 (→GE4GE5)

Our suggestion

..

Chopin added the pedalling in a proofreading of FE. The  mark, overlooked in bar 28, was added in GE3 (→GE4GE5), yet too early, as it seems; the reviser probably did not notice that despite a different notation, the bass note remains unchanged during the entire bar. The addition we perform includes the authentic pedalling from the previous bar. See also bars 32-36

b. 28-29

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

Slur in A

No slur in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we give the slur of A, most probably overlooked in FE (→GE,EE).

b. 29

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

4th finger in A

No numeral in FE (→GE)

Different fingering in EE

..

The '4' digit over the 6th note was omitted in FE (→GE), most probably due to distraction. In EE Fontana added the fingering for this note and a few subsequent ones, different than it would stem from Chopin's fingering.

More likely reading of slurs in A

Less likely reading of A (→FEGE,EE)

..

In the main text we give the interpretation of ambiguous slurs of A compliant with Chopin's proofreading of the slurs in FE in analogous bars 25-27. In FE (→GE,EE) both slurs were interpreted as embracing only the 2nd halves of bars 29 and 30. According to us, the interpretation may be considered as an equal variant in relation to the main text, as Chopin, in a sense, authorised it by adding staccato dots in bar 30.
