b. 21-22

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

 in A

FE (→EE)

GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In the main text we reproduce the range of the  hairpins in these bars after A. In FE (→EE) they were recreated with a slightly shortened mark in bar 21. GE repeats the mark of FE in bar 21, while in bar 22 the  mark was gradually elongated until occupying the entire bar.

b. 24-25

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

..

Shortening of the slur in the editions is, according to us, a result of either a misunderstanding of the autograph or the engraver's inaccuracy. Cf. bars 25-31.

Our variant suggestion

..

Same as in bars 1-14, the omission of the hairpins in bars 25-26 and 28 in the editions may be – independently from the reason – considered as accepted by Chopin. Also in this case the musical image with only one pair of marks in bar 27 is logical and convincing. In the main text we give additional marks of A in brackets, which, according to us, will offer the performer the richest palette of performance possibilities.

b. 25

composition: Op. 10 No 11, Etude in E♭ major

dolce in A. GE & EE

dolce in FE

..

The arrangement of dolce in A suggests that it concerns the 2nd and subsequent quavers in the bar. However, in FE it was put already over the 1st quaver, which, according to us, is a result of a misunderstanding of Chopin's intention by the engraver. What is interesting is the fact that both in GE and in EE the hint was arranged after A and not FE.

Slurs in A

FE (→GE,EE)

..

All slurs of A clearly reach the 1st quavers in these bars marked staccato (apart from bars 27-28, discussed separately). It is unclear why they were shortened in the editions, yet nothing indicates that it could be a result of Chopin's intervention.
