b. 72

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No pedalling in CLI & FE (→GE1GE2, →EE2EE3)

Pedalling in GE3 (→GE4GE5) & EE4

Our suggestion

..

Lack of pedalling in FE (→GE1GE2,→EE2EE3) seems to be a result of Chopin's oversight, therefore, in the main text we propose to complete it on the basis of the authentic pedalling in similar bar 70. This was already done in GE3 (→GE4GE5) and EE4.

In CLI there is no  returning f1, which is an obvious error.

Ties in GE & EE

..

In FE there are no ties sustaining the upper notes of the octaves in bars 73-74 and 75-76. According to us, the most probable explanation is a misunderstanding at the time of changing the original abbreviated notation of the octaves with the use of under the upper notes for regular notation. In CLI the octaves, written in the described brief manner, are not sustained at all, which most probably is a mistake.

b. 73

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

..

We add a cautionary  before e. The sign was already added in GE2 – and subsequent ones – and in EE4.

No mark in CLI & EE

Accent in FE (→GE)

..

Lack of the accent, undoubtedly authentic, in EE is most probably a result of the engraver's distraction (cf. bars 71-78).
