GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Fr. Kistner
Date: VIII 1833
Title: Douze Grandes Etudes || No. 2
Dedication: SON AMI J. LISZT

First German edition, in which the entire Op. 10 was divided into two books, 6 etudes each. GE1 was based on [FE0''], the proof copy of FE which did not include Chopin's last corrections. It is indicated by the following errors and inaccuracies repeated after [FE0''], yet absent in finished FE1: a  before c1 on the 2nd beat of bar 2 (probably), lack of the  before g2 in bars 7 and 21.

In the entire Op. 10, numerous additions were performed at the time of printing GE1, above all, accidentals, as well as changes; their traces are particularly visible. However, Chopin's participation in GE1 seems to be highly unlikely due to his relation with the just obtained Parisian editor, as well as due to some evidently erroneous, thus certainly non-authentic changes introduced in GE1 (see the Etude in C major, No. 1).

However, a kind of Chopin's influence on the final shape of GE1 cannot be excluded, therefore, the question of authenticity of some of the versions cannot be considered to be conclusively decided. In this Etude one could assume the fingering added in bar 1, slurs in the L.H. in bars 17-18 and a correction of the error in bar 26 (the  returning e2) to be authentic.

Other changes of GE1 with respect to FE1 include, among others:

  • adding ties sustaining in bar 4 and analog., as well as the slur in bar 31,
  • additions of accidentals, e.g. a  before c3 in bar 5, before f2 in bar 8, before d2 and f2 in bar 19, a  before d in bar 20 and e1 in bar 29,
  • extending the  hairpins in bar 34,
  • replacing the abbreviation dim. with dimin. in bars 8, 17 and 48,
  • replacing the abbreviated notation of the lower octave in the L.H. with common notation in bar 46,
  • adding fermata under the bottom stave in bar 49.

In GE1 the erroneous initial of Liszt's name (J) was repeated after FE1. The pencil entries visible in the copy do not have any source value.
