FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VI 1833
Title: Etudes || No. 2
Dedication: son Ami J. Liszt

First French edition, based on an autograph, perhaps the same that served as base text for CLI (see below). The comparison of FEcor with finished FE1 shows that a certain group of corrections was introduced only in a later stage of proofreading, in turn, some of them were included in GE1, some not. It indicates at least three stages of proofreading of FE1. The type and scope of the introduced changes, as well as the preserved correspondence between Schlesinger and Kistner, allows to trust the authenticity of later stages of proofreading too, although some of the then added cautionary accidentals seem to suggest a possibility of participation of the reviser (e.g., in bars 27 or 29). Examples of changes performed at particular stages of proofreading:

  1. all additions of Chopin's proofreading of FEcor;
  2. changes not included in FEcor, hence introduced later, included in GE1 – adding naturals before c1 on the 2nd beat of bar 2 and analog., as well as before c2 on the 2nd beat of bars 21-22, adding dynamic indications in bars 19-25, deleting a1 in bar 31;
  3. even later changes, not included in GE1 – moving the  before c1 in bar 2, adding a  before g2 in bars 7 and 21, before a1 in bar 29.

It was [AIthat could be base text for FE1, which is indicated by high compliance of the text of [FE0] and CLI, based on this autograph (see the characteristics of FEcor). If this was the case, Chopin would have corrected and completed the autograph before handing it to the editor, as some changes, if performed in print, would have left traces, which are, however, not to be seen. An alternative possibility is preparation of a new autograph, including the aforementioned corrections.
