b. 37

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

Triad & fifth in CLI

Triads in Ap & FEcor

Triads in FE (→EE2EE3)

Triads in GE & #Wa4

..

The fifth on the 3rd beat of the bar in CLI is probably the original version. In the sources Chopin's hesitation is also reflected, as far as the position of the cautionary  before cis concerned. In the main text we adopt – following FE (→EE2EE3) – the sign before the chord on the 3rd beat of the bar.

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No  in CLI

Natural in ApFE (→GE,EE

..

Lack of the  returning b2 on the penultimate semiquaver is most probably an inaccuracy of notation of CLI. Chopin added the accidental in FEcor.

Semiquavers & crotchets in Ap

..

In Ap the rhythmic values of subsequent two-note chords of the lower voice in the R.H. create an alternating short-long scheme (semiquaver-crotchet). The resounding length contrast is additionally underlined with an accent. Same as in analogous places, the scheme is continued in the next bar. In the main text we give the homogenous, as far as the sound is concerned, version of FE (→GE,EE).

Probable accent in Ap

Possible long accent in Ap

Possible  in Ap

..

The sign in Ap may be, according to us, interpreted as an accent (short?) or . All three signs of this type in bars 38-39 look like short accents, yet only the one in the L.H. in bar 39 is clearly put under the note it concerns. In the main text we do not consider this ambiguous sign. Similarly in bar 39.
