b. 90

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Notation in EE & GC (→GE1)

..

Both forms of notation of the 1st beat – two-part and one-part – are probably authentic. GE2 has rests added for the upper part, which is the editor's arbitrary addition and an unnecessary complication. Similar differences occur in the analogous bar 432.

b. 91

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

c3-e3 in EE, FE & GE

a2-c3 in GC

..

GC has the third a2-c sharpin the upper voice. The fact that EE and FE consistently have a different version testifies to Gutmann's error, quite often to be found in his copies  (cf. bar 100). GE also has the correct version.

b. 91-96

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Accents in EE

..

The sources have different types of accents used in those bars, and those accents are also placed differently. In our main text we have the version of GC that unifies those differences. It may also be considered as an interpretation of the notation of FE and EE. The version of EE is probably inaccurate.

b. 95

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No accidentals in EE, GC (→GE) & FE1

Naturals in FE2

Our suggestion

..

We consider the version with the octave D sharp-d sharp to be the main one, as none of the sources that could be based on the autograph (GC, EE, FE1) has naturals. Still, omission of those accidentals is very probable in that context, so the version of FE2 (D-d) could actually be the one intended by Chopin. To make things clear, we notate the version D sharp-d sharp with cautionary accidentals. Cf. bar 433.

b. 95

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No accidental in EE

Natural in GC (→GE) & FE

..

EE does not have  lowering d sharp2 to d2 , which is probably due to oversight.
