GE1 is based on A and it generally reproduces its text quite faithfully. The greatest difference between GE1  and its base text (A)  is the erroneous value of the metronome tempo. The remaining discrepancies are minor inaccuracies, either accidental or resulting from certain general assumptions related to notation (see below). However, there are no differences that would point to Chopin's participation in the preparation of GE1. An exception to this general statement for the entire opus 24 is slur corrections in bars 58-59 and 62-63, where Chopin's authorship seems undisputed. What is more, those corrections were not taken into account in FE, despite the fact that the French edition was surely based on GE1. This means that Chopin introduced those two changes only after the base text for FE had been sent out.

There are copies of GE1with different covers, or printed with a different printing technique.

Characteristic features of GE1 in all the Mazurkas Op 24. include:

  • lack of differentiation between various types of staccato signs – only dots were used, despite the fact that A had both dots and wedges (cf. e.g. bar 90);
  • mechanical adjustment of the position of signs or their essential fragments (beginnings and endings of slurs and hairpins) to the closest notes, sometimes clearly against the notation of the base text, e.g.  in bars 57-68 or  in bar 34;
  • the use of a single type of accent mark (short), despite numerous clearly longer marks in A, for instance in bars 15 and 19 or 41 and 43; some of Chopin’s long accents were reproduced as short diminuendo hairpins (e.g. in bars 73-88).
