AE - Autograph Eszterhazy

Date: 1841-1842 (?)
Title: Valse
Dedication: Mme la Csse Eszterhazy

Autograph-gift developed on cream paper, 14 staves per page. The title - Valse - is placed in the top margin, on the left-hand side, whereas on the right-hand side, there is a dedication: à Mme la Csse Eszterhazy FChopin. The bar lines in the last bar are followed by the composer's signature: FCh.

It is the only autograph featuring a legato articulation marking over the upbeat (repeated in CC, too). Chopin wrote one dynamic hairpin in the 1st volta. On the 4th stave, the last four bars were crossed out - Chopin started rewriting bars 33-36, which had been already entered. The copy was probably used during lessons, which may be indicated by annotations performed in pencil: the grace note in the first bar, an additional crescendo hairpin in the 1st volta or the fingering in bar 16.

In 2000, the autograph was purchased at an auction by Julliard School of Music. Prior to that, it constituted a part of an extensive, private collection of musical manuscripts (ca. 1300 items) of François Lang, kept in the Royaumont Abbey.
