Slurs

b. 99-100

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur to b. 100 in A

Slur to end of b. 99 in GE

Slur to f in FE, EE & IE

..

In GE the ending of the slur in bar 99 (at the end of a line) can be considered a tenuto slur. However, it is most probably an inaccuracy – the slur was either supposed to reach bar 100, as it is in A, or the f crotchet, as it was unanimously interpreted in the remaining editions.

b. 120-121

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in A (contextual interpretation→GEFE,EE,IE)

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur is not related to the phrase structure, which raises doubts as to its range, particularly in the face of numerous other examples of inaccurate slurs in this manuscript (e.g. in bars 96-97). Due to the above, in the main text we provide the interpretation of this slur as adopted by GE (→FE,EE,IE), which is a reasonable compromise between the actual range of the phrase, confirmed by the R.H. slur, and the actual notation (cf. also the L.H. slur in a similar context in bars 112-114).

b. 124

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur to c in A (→GE) & EE2, literal reading

Slur to next bar in A (contextual interpretation), FE & IE

No slur in EE1

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur reaches the last note in the bar. However, in the next bar, in a new line, the slur clearly shows that it should have been continued, which is also confirmed by the slurs in the similar situations in bars 126-127 and 128-130. This ambiguous notation was reproduced in GE and EE2 (in EE1 the slur was omitted). In FE and IE there is a continuous slur, in accordance with our interpretation.

b. 125-126

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur to C in A

Slur to E in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The A slur reaches almost the bar line, yet its shape rather does not suggest that it was intended to be led to E, as it was reproduced in GE (→FE,EE,IE). Cf. the slurs in bar 127 and 130.

b. 139

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Slur from b to L.H. e1 in A, literal reading

Slur from e to L.H. e1 in GE (→EE)

Slur from e to R.H. e1 in FE & IE

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur begins from b. However, the shape of the slur suggests e as the intentional starting point of the slur, and this is how it was reproduced in the editions. We adopt this phrasing, more natural in this context, also to the main text. FE and IE assumed that the imprecise ending of the slur in GE (→EE) reaches the last quaver in the bar.
