b. 28-30

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

When interpreted literally, all 3 slurs starting from the a notes reach only the penultimate quaver in the bar in A. However, there is no doubt that it is an inaccuracy – cf. the A slurs in the L.H. part in bars 28-29 – hence we do not consider them an actual variant and reproduce them in this form only in the graphic transcription. In GE (→FE,EE,IE) the slurs were led to the last quaver, in accordance with our interpretation thereof.

b. 28-31

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

di - mi - nu - en - do w A, contextual interpretation

dim. in b. 29 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In A Chopin divided the diminuendo indication into parts, which he then arranged over bars 28-30. The last entered part is ue, while the rest is missing. In the main text we complement this indication, keeping it proportionally spaced out so that the ending thereof falls on bar 31, which goes well with  in bar 32. The editions used a standard dim. abbreviation, placing it at the beginning of bar 29, which suggests a slightly later starting point of diminuendo than in A.

No fingering in A (→GEFE,EE)

Fingering in EE

..

In the main text, we do not include the inauthentic fingering added by EE. The digit for g in bar 30 (1, i.e. the 2nd finger) is certainly wrong – it was supposed to be a 4 (i.e. the 5th finger).

b. 30-31

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

In the main text we do not include the cautionary flats to a1 and a, added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

No slur in A

Slur from g1 in GE (→FE,IE)

Slur from g1 in EE, our suggestion

..

The fact that Chopin omitted the L.H. slur was almost certainly caused by the lack of space for writing it – this bar is written in A in the bass clef, while over the highly placed notes there is a fragment of the diminuendo indication and the R.H. slur. In the main text we provide a slur compliant with the slurs in the previous bars. The whole-bar GE slur (→FE,IE) resulted from an arbitrary decision by the engraver of GE (as in the preceding and the next bar). It is difficult to say whether EE shortening the slur (with respect to GE) is an inaccuracy or a lucky revision (after the R.H. slur?).
