b. 95

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

in A

 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

In the main text we put the  indication as close as possible to the literal interpretation of A. However, taking into account the lack of place in the first half of the bar, one cannot rule out that the GE version (→FE,EE,IE) correctly conveys Chopin's intention.

b. 95-96

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Continuous slur in A

Separate slurs in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The GE interpretation (→FE,EE,IE) of the A notation does not seem to be correct – the slur at the end of the line (bar 95) clearly goes beyond the bar line, while its continuation at the beginning of the next line unmistakably starts before the first note in bar 96. Therefore, in the main text we provide the A version, despite the fact that the division of the slur corresponds to the structural division.

b. 96-97

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

In both bars the  to A1 is written in A just below the stave, hence at the pitch of F or E. Chopin was probably adding these accidentals later and put them at a distance from the noteheads so that they do not blend in with the ledger lines, firmly convinced that in this context it would not lead to any misunderstanding.

Slur from A1 to D in A, literal reading

No slur in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

Slur from G1 to Fis in A, possible contextual interpretation

..

In A there is a slur (a fragment of a slur?) over the L.H. quavers, running from the 3rd to the 6th quaver. The comparison with analogous bar 293 suggests that Chopin wanted to write here a slur of similar range, yet he did it inaccurately, restricted by the parts of both hands being written on one stave. It is also likely that he left the mark unfinished, as he considered that it was impossible to achieve the satisfying version; he could have also abandoned the slur, settling for the marcato indication. Due to the above, in the main text we do not include this slur, hence following GE (→FE,EE,IE). We suggest a slur modelled after bar 293 as an alternative solution.

Adjusting the  hairpin to the quaver beam is a routine revision of GE (→FE,EE,IE). By contrast, the omission of the  mark can be attributed to the misunderstanding of A, in which the bottom arm of the hairpin is barely visible.
