Slurs

b. 119

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur divided after 3rd quaver in A, literal reading

Slur divided before 3rd quaver in A (contextual interpretationGEFE,EE,IE)

..

When interpreted literally, the A slurs are divided after the 3rd quaver in the bar. The comparison with analogous bar 131, 133 and 135 reveals that the notation is inaccurate. Therefore, to the main text we adopt the interpretation introduced by GE (→FE,EE,IE), in which the slur is divided before the 3rd quaver in the bar.

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

No slurs in A

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

In the main text we suggest supplementing L.H. slurs after authentic markings in the majority of similar motifs in the previous bars. Such slurs were already added by GE (→FE,EE,IE).

Continuous slur in A

2 slurs in GE (→FE,IE)

1 slur in EE

..

In A the slur in bar 120, which ends a line, reaches the bar line, yet it is very close to the last quaver, hence it can be interpreted both as a slur ending in this bar and as a slur that should be continued. The beginning of the slur in bar 121 is misleading – the main part of the slur starts over the 1st quaver, yet Chopin started writing it much earlier, which is poorly visible due to ink stoppage. When considering the slur as a whole, it undoubtedly indicates that it should be continued from the preceding bar. Therefore, in the main text we provide a continuous slur, which is more natural in terms of music. The version of the editions resulted from an inaccurate interpretation of the slurs by the engraver of GE, while in the case of EE also from an oversight by the engraver of EE.

b. 124

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur to 6th quaver in A, literal reading

Slur to 7th quaver in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The fact that the A slur ends already on the 6th quaver in the bar is musically unjustified. This is confirmed by the comparison with similar figures, e.g. in bar 126. Due to the above, to the main text we adopt a slur led to the 7th quaver, as in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 126-127

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur to 7th quaver in A

Slur to b. 127 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The GE slur (→FE,EE,IE) having been led to the beginning of bar 127 was an arbitrary decision of the engraver of GE. Pianistically and musically speaking, such a slur would be justified, yet Chopin did not write such long slurs, neither here nor in any analogous bar. In the main text we provide the A slur.
