Slurs

b. 4-5

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Continuous slur in A & FE

Separate slurs in GE (→EE,IE)

..

In the main text we provide the undoubtedly continuous A slur (although combined out of two fragments). In GE the slur in bar 5, which opens a new line (as in our transcriptions), was reproduced correctly, which means that it should be continued, but the slur's fragment in bar 4 reaches only the last quaver, e. EE and IE considered the slur in bar 4 to be correct, while FE guessed Chopin's intention.

b. 7

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

No slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors

..

Leaving the L.H. quaver motif without a slur seems to be Chopin's inadvertence, since the motif's structure and nature clearly refer to the Sonata's opening motif. Admittedly, similar figures are quite often provided with inconsistent slurs in the Sonata, yet in this case it is more likely that we are dealing with the composer's oversight, as evidenced by the slur in the analogous bar in the recapitulation (bar 185). Taking into account the above, in the main text we add a slur modelled after that bar.

b. 11

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur in A, literal reading

Slur in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

When interpreted literally, the A slur is musically unjustified – it is almost certain that the slur should start earlier, yet Chopin wanted to avoid a clash with the already existing elements of notation, that is the bottom voice minim and the natural to e2. Similar inaccuracies occur in this movement on a number of occasions – cf. the note on bars 17-20. The end of the slur is also uncertain – we consider the interpretation adopted to GE (→FE,EE,IE) to be most accurate and suggest it as the main text.

b. 17-20

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

..

The beginnings of the L.H. slurs fall on the 1st or the 2nd note of the half-bar figures. It must be an inaccuracy caused by the presence of the minims prolonging the 1st quaver of each figure. Chopin tried to avoid a clash of the slur with the note, which, considering quick pen movements, made the beginning of the slur occur already under the 2nd quaver. It was already GE that assessed this situation in this way (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 17

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

Slur in A (→GEEE,IE)

No slur in FE

..

The lack of a slur in FE is most likely an oversight on the part of the engraver.
