Pedalling

b. 2-17

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedalling in A (→GE) & FE2 (→EE)

No markings in FE1

..

In bars 2-3, 12-13 and 16-17, in the main text we include the unanimous pedalling added by Chopin to A (→GE) and added at the stage of proofreading FE2 (→EE). The fact that the markings were added to A most probably after [FC] had already been prepared is proven by their absence in FE1.

b. 7-8

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

after 3rd beat of b. 7 in A (→GE)

No marking in FE

in bar 8 in EE

before 3rd beat suggested by the editors

..

The  asterisk is placed in A before the 4th beat of the bar, while in GE even further (under the 4th beat). According to us, it is an inaccuracy of notation, hence in the main text we suggest a pedal change along with a chord change on the 3rd beat of the bar, as marked by Chopin in analogous places. The absence of the mark in FE most probably means that Chopin either did not notice the absence of a  or ignored it while proofreading FE2 (cf. the note on bars 2-17). The mark added by EE cannot be authentic.

b. 18

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedalling in A (→GE) & FE2 (→EE)

No markings in FE1

..

As in bars 2-17, the missing pedalling in FE1 indicates that it was added to A after [FC] had been finished. Chopin also added pedalling while proofreading FE2 (→EE).

Pedalling in GE & EE2

No markings in FE (→EE1)

..

The pedal markings in these bars (as well as in the subsequent ones, until bar 42) were added to A almost certainly after [FC] had already been finished, which explains their absence in FE (→EE1), based on this copy. It is difficult to imagine that an entire page of markings could have been overlooked; the same applies to the possibility of the markings having been removed from [FC] or FE. In GE the A notation was reproduced with a minor inaccuracy – the first  mark in bar 20 was placed right before the next  mark, hence after the chord on the 2nd beat, and not before, as it can be seen in A. Moreover, a  was added at the end of this bar, which we include in the main text, since the absence of this mark is probably Chopin's oversight (in A this bar is at the end of a line, which is conducive to oversights). The markings in EE2 were added on the basis of GE1.

b. 22

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

    in A (→GE)

No markings in FE (→EE1)

    in EE2

..

The missing pedal change on the 3rd beat must be a mistake by the reviser or the engraver of EE2.
