Pedalling

b. 68

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Whole-bar pedal in A (→GE)

Half-bar pedal in FE & EE2

No marking in EE1

Our variant suggestion

..

The difference between the pedalling versions of A (→GE) and FE does not seem accidental. This is indicated by similar differences in bars 43-48 and by the pedalling version in bar 52 (probably authentic). Therefore, the FE pedalling is most probably authentic, yet it is uncertain whether Chopin replaced the pedalling repeated after A with this version (in [FC] or while proofreading FE1) or whether he added it in a place in which the copyist or the engraver overlooked the markings or whether, last but not least, he added the pedalling independently to A and to [FC] or while proofreading FE1. The missing markings in FE in the next bar may point to the second possibility – distraction leading to the oversight of markings could have encompassed both bars, whereas Chopin noticed and corrected it only in bar 68. Not being sure whether Chopin considered the FE pedalling to be final, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, as in a similar situation in bars 43-48.
The overlooked markings in EE1 are a mistake, corrected in EE2

b. 69

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedalling in A (→GE) & EE2

No markings in FE (→EE1)

..

The missing pedal markings in FE (→EE1) almost certainly resulted from an oversight by the copyist or by the engraver, in this bar – unlike in the preceding one – not corrected by Chopin. The marks of EE2 were added after GE1.

b. 70

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

 after 9th quaver in A (→GE)

at end of bar in FE (→EE)

..

The earlier pedal release marked in A (→GE) must be Chopin's mistake, probably having resulted from the visible corrections to the L.H. part. In the main text we give the undoubtedly correct FE (→EE) pedalling, compliant with the harmonic course (no change of chord in this half of the bar).

b. 79-80

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedal change at bar line in A (→GE)

Pedal change in b. 79 in FE (→EE)

..

The earlier pedal change in FE (→EE) must be a mistake by the engraver of FE or by the copyist in [FC].

b. 83

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedal change in A (→GE)

Half-bar pedal in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

Both source versions of the pedalling in the 2nd half of this bar must be authentic. A similar difference is to be observed in analogous bar 170, in which, however, there is a pedal change on the 4th crotchet in the bar in FE (in A Chopin deleted it). Not being certain about Chopin's final decision in these bars (if there was any at all!), in the main text we suggest a variant solution.
