Pedalling

b. 155-156

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedal in A (→GE) & EE2

No markings in FE (→EE1)

Our variant suggestion

..

We provide the whole-bar A pedal mark (→GE), the only indication written here by Chopin, as the principal pedal mark. However, as in a similar context in bar 68 Chopin provided two pedalling variants, we suggest the version with a half-bar pedal mark, in this case absent in FE (perhaps due to an oversight), as an alternative solution.

b. 162-163

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Continuous pedal in A (→GE)

Pedal changes in FE (→EE)

..

Chopin must have added the two pedal changes within this two-bar section to [FC] or while proofreading FE1. The comparison with analogous bars 75-76 and 242-243 suggests that Chopin committed a mistake while writing the A pedal markings concerning the discussed bars, confused by the L.H. part shorthand notation.

b. 170

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Half-bar pedal in A (→GE)

Pedal change in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

In A Chopin deleted the pedal change on the 4th crotchet in the bar, yet in analogous bar 83 it was the other way around – there are two pedal changes in A (→GE) and one in FE (→EE). The fact that Chopin left various versions in these sources (which he proofread) proves that he hesitated, hence in the main text we suggest a variant solution.

b. 180-181

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Continuous pedal in A

No pedal in GE, interpretation

2 pedals in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

The FE pedal markings take advantage of the harmonic legato, carefully written out by Chopin, and is recommended as such, particularly on contemporary pianos – cf. bars 43-48. Due to this fact, as in those bars, in the main text we include it in a variant form, keeping the A indication as the principal one. In GE there is no  mark at all in these bars, which we interpret as the absence of pedalling.
See also bars 184-185.

b. 184-185

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

No markings in sources

[] suggested by the editors

..

Our variant suggestion is based on the authentic pedal markings in analogous bars 180-181. In the discussed bars the markings are generally compliant in all sources; it is only in FE (→EE) that the  asterisk is placed only just at the beginning of bar 186, which we do not consider an actual variant of the markings, since it must be an inaccuracy.
