Pedalling

b. 116-118

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedalling after A (→GE)

No pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

The pedal markings in these bars were most probably added to A after [FC] had been prepared, which explains their absence in FE (→EE). Similarly, in bars 124-126.

b. 123

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

at end of bar in A (→GE)

in first half of bar in FE (→EE)

..

The FE pedalling is probably earlier. This is evidenced by the unfinished  asterisk, crossed out in A in the same place in which a  is present in FE. It is likely that Chopin added pedal markings in this fragment first to [FC], and then, while adding them to A, he assumed that the pedal should be held longer (he also added markings in the three subsequent bars).

b. 124-126

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Pedalling in A (→GE)

No markings in FE (→EE)

..

As in bars 116-118, pedal markings concerning these bars were most probably added to A after [FC] had been finished, which explains their absence in FE (→EE).

b. 146-147

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

  in b. 147 in A (→GE)

 in b. 146-147 in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we give the FE (→EE) pedal markings, compliant with the rhythm of harmonic changes and almost certainly resulting from Chopin's addition or correction to [FC] or while proofreading FE. The A pedal markings, although corrected by Chopin, probably resulted from the composer's mistake, misled by the enharmonic change of notation in bar 147, suggesting a harmonic change, which, actually, occurs earlier, between the bars.

b. 153

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

at beginning of bar in A (→GE)

mid-bar in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

According to us, both versions of pedal markings in this bar are probably authentic – added by Chopin independently to A and to [FC] (or while proofreading FE1). Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution. In analogous bar 233 all sources indicate that the pedal should be pressed at the beginning of the bar.
