Slurs

b. 216-217

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slurs divided above rest in A (→GE)

Slurs divided above barline in FE (→EE)

..

The FE (→EE) slurs almost certainly resulted from inaccuracies in the reproduction of the A notation, committed by the copyist or by the engraver, or by both.

b. 219-221

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slurs to next bar in A, literal reading

Slurs over triplets in GE & FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we suggest the literal interpretation of the A slurs. Typical Chopinesque triplet slurs are short and rarely go beyond the triplet (cf. bar 78, 114 and 281), which justifies our interpretation, in spite of the discussed slurs having been written carelessly. Therefore, these slurs having been reproduced as triplet slurs by the editions can be considered justified and potentially accurate.

b. 220

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur to f1 crotchet in A (→GE) & EE

Slur to g1 in FE

..

The FE slur is manifestly inaccurate, which was corrected in EE.

b. 232-233

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur to b. 233 in A (→GE)

Slur to end of b. 232 (literal reading→EE)

..

In FE the slur in bar 232, at the end of a page, suggests that it should be continued, yet there is no ending thereof on the following page. EE considered the slur to be excessively long and ended it on the last quaver in the bar. In the main text we give the unequivocal A slur (→GE).

b. 234-235

composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor

Slur to b. 235 in A, contextual interpretation

No slur in GE & EE2

Slur in b. 234 in FE (→EE1)

..

In A the slur in bar 234, last on a page, clearly suggests that it should be continued, yet there is no ending thereof on the following page. The fact that Chopin indeed wanted to lead the slur to the beginning of bar 235 is confirmed by the slur (consistent in all sources) in analogous bars 154-155. The FE slur (→EE1) suggests that Fontana did not lead the slur to bar 235 in [FC]. In EE2 the slur was deleted, most probably after the GE version, in which the A slur was overlooked.
