Slurs
b. 203-219
|
composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor
..
In A the B major section spans four lines, which means that there are three transitions between the lines. In all three places the slurs at the end of the lines clearly suggest that they should be continued, which is not confirmed by the slurs at the beginning of the next lines, starting from the 1st note (bar 203, 213 and 219). Such situations are frequent in Chopin's autographs, and their interpretation is ambiguous – there are cases in which a slur going beyond the bar line must be considered inaccurate and cases in which breaking a slur is musically unjustified. In the discussed bars we are clearly dealing with the latter, which was accurately recognised already in the first editions, providing continuous slurs. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Source & stylistic information |

The longer slur we suggest is justified by the A notation in analogous bars 219-221. Both slurs present there go beyond the bar line, which suggests that they should be led to the beginning of the next bar. category imprint: Editorial revisions issues: Triplet slurs |

b. 204-205
|
composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor
..
As in bars 199-203, the FE slurs may be an authentic variant of phrasing, yet most probably written down inaccurately. We assume that the beginning of the slur in bar 205 is probably erroneous (from the 1st chord, suggesting that the phrase should be divided internally, resulting in the dominant chord leading to the tonic chord being separated from it). Therefore, as an alternative for the source notation, we suggest moving the beginning of this slur over the next chord. In the main text we give here the A slurs (→GE), unquestionable in this place, despite the beginning of the slur starting in bar 204 being over the g1 semiquaver (most probably due to ink stoppage). category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |

b. 206
|
composition: Op. 49, Fantaisie in F minor
..
The combination of an inaccurately written slur and the initial layout, in which the 2nd R.H. crotchet is written entirely on the bottom stave, resulted in a wrong interpretation of the slur ending both in GE and FE (→EE). Similarly, in bar 215. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |

In A the slur reaches only the 1st crotchet in the bar, which was repeated by all editions. According to us, it is, however, the most glaring example of the inaccuracies concerning the A slurs in this section – cf. the slurs beginning too early or ending too soon in bars 200-201, 204 and 206 as well as at the beginning of lines in bar 203, 213 and 219. Due to this, in the main text we give a slur reaching the 2nd crotchet, in accordance with the musical sense – cf. bar 199. category imprint: Editorial revisions issues: Inaccurate slurs in A |
