b. 26

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

Without slur or wedge in FE

Slur & staccato dot in GE

Slur & wedge in EE

..

In FE the second rhythmic group in the L.H. part is provided neither with a slur nor with a wedge, which is either the engraver's oversight or Chopin's inadvertence. The marks were added in GE and EE, yet in GE the wedge was changed to a staccato dot as part of general revision – see the note in bar 20.

b. 41

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

Two kinds of staccato markings present in FE (→EE), wedges and dots, very typical of Chopin in that period, were reduced by GE to one kind in the entire Variations – dots. This is what occurred in this bar: the wedge under the d1-f1 third in FE (→EE) was changed to a staccato dot in GE.

Wedge in FE (→EE)

No markings in GE

Our suggestion

..

We assume that the wedge in FE (→EE) was supposed to refer to both octaves or that the other one was forgotten. However, this articulation should undoubtedly be implemented by both hands, hence in the main text we suggest the supplemented FE text (→EE). The absence of the mark in GE is most probably an oversight. See also the note in bar 60.

b. 67-76

composition: Op. 12, Variations in B♭ major

..

Most of the wedges present in FE (→EE) were arbitrarily changed to staccato dots in GE – see the note in bar 7. As the change covers all wedges included in GE, we consider the version of this edition one variant, on this page encompassing 11 marks in bars 67-70, 73 and 75-76, but we discuss the last two groups of bars separately due to the omission of wedges in EE – see the notes at the beginning of bar 73 and 75.

Staccato dot in FE

No staccato dot in GE & EE

..

The fact that the staccato dot is missing both in GE and EE makes us ponder whether Chopin did not add it later – while proofreading FE, after having sent the copies serving as the bases for GE and EE.
