The FE slur was printed inaccurately – it clearly starts before the crotchet in bar 33, but not before the bar line, hence in GE and EE it does not include the upbeat. A comparison with the slur over the repetition of this phrase in bars 34-36 proves that this interpretation is wrong. In this kind of texture, in which the parts of both hands move in parallel or at least in the same rhythm (as in bars 37-38), Chopin would often settle for a slur over the top voice; however, he would also use double slurs quite frequently (cf., e.g. the middle fragment of the Larghetto from the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, in which only some phrases are provided with single slurs, e.g. from bar 57). Taking into account the possibility that we could be dealing here with authentic GE proofreading, in the main text we suggest a slur in brackets.
