Title: | Quatre Mazurkas |
Dedication: | Madame la Princesse de Wurtemberg née Princesse Czartoryska |
FE1 was based on the lost autograph [A] or its lost copy. If it were a copy, many changes that seem to be Chopinesque corrections of FE1, could have already been introduced into the copy. However, without access to that basis, these two situations can be differentiated only on the basis of visible traces of corrections performed in print; unfortunately, on the available copies of FE1 such traces are absent or are only circumstantial.
Therefore, the below list includes jointly the possible Chopinesque interventions into FE1 or the manuscript that served as the basis. These are mainly additions of various performance markings, e.g.:
- legato in bar 1,
- poco ritenuto, in tempo and sempre piano in bars 55-57,
- cresc. - - in bars 69-73,
- stretto - - cresc. - - in bars 81-88,
- calando in bars 126-128,
- smorz. - - in bars 136-139;
- pedalling in bars 77-78 and 93-94.
Some of them were entered by Chopin also into FC, which suggests that the composer gave the Mazurkas a shape that would be worthy of publication twice, probably at a different time, as a result of which the effects of these retouches overlapped only partially.
Among the defects of FE1 one can mention:
- erroneous notes – b1 instead of d2 in bar 47, f1-g1 instead of e1-f1 in bar 94;
- the overlooked tie to d in bars 9-10;
- the erroneously placed tie to f in bars 19-20;
- overlooked arpeggios in bars 113-115.
